Discovery is becoming conversational

For years, online shopping began with a search box. A shopper entered a few keywords, opened several tabs, filtered hundreds of results, and gradually worked out what they wanted. Brands optimized around this behavior: rank for the right phrase, win the click, and send everyone to the most relevant product or category page.

The AI can ask follow-up questions, compare products, explain tradeoffs, and narrow a large market into a small group of relevant options. By the time the shopper reaches a brand’s website, much of the discovery process may have already happened.

ChatGPT now supports visual product discovery and comparison using details such as price, reviews, and product features. Google is similarly expanding conversational shopping across AI-powered experiences, including Gemini and AI Mode. These environments are moving closer to the role of a personal shopping assistant rather than a traditional list of links.

The new post-click gap

AI can deliver a highly contextual recommendation. But the destination often removes all that context. A shopper explains exactly what they need. The AI recommends a relevant product. They click—and arrive on the same generic product page shown to every other visitor.

Consider two shoppers arriving at the same moisturizer:

Shopper A
Wants a fragrance-free product for sensitive skin that layers well under makeup.

Shopper B
Wants an intensive night moisturizer for a dry climate and is comfortable with a richer texture.

The same product might suit both shoppers, but the most persuasive story is different.

Shopper A needs to see:

  • Fragrance-free and sensitive-skin credentials

  • Texture and absorption information

  • Compatibility with makeup

  • Reviews from customers with similar concerns

Shopper B needs to see:

  • Long-lasting hydration

  • Nighttime application guidance

  • Climate and seasonal relevance

  • Reviews focused on severe dryness

Sending both visitors to an identical page leaves the shopper to reconstruct the connection themselves. The next generation of landing experiences should preserve that connection.

What AI-assisted shoppers expect

Someone arriving from an AI conversation may behave differently from a shopper arriving through a broad social advertisement or generic search result.

They are likely to have:

  • A more clearly defined need

  • A smaller consideration set

  • Specific requirements or constraints

  • Questions about tradeoffs

  • A stronger expectation of relevance

  • Greater readiness to evaluate or purchase

This does not mean every AI-originated visitor is ready to buy. Some are still exploring. Others are comparing two or three options. Some need one remaining piece of evidence before making a decision.

1. Discovery

The shopper is exploring a category or trying to understand which product type fits their need. The destination should educate, simplify the category, and help them identify the right path.

2. Evaluation

The shopper has several candidates and wants to compare features, prices, ingredients, or suitability. The destination should make differences, evidence, and tradeoffs easy to understand.

3. Purchase

The shopper has largely decided and needs confidence around availability, delivery, returns, compatibility, or final product selection. The destination should reduce uncertainty and make the next action clear. A generic product page attempts to serve all three stages simultaneously. An intent-aware experience can prioritize the information that matters now.
